Helen Hayes MacArthur,
the "First Lady of the America Theater," was appointed
to the hospital's Board of Visitors in 1944. So began a 49-year
relationship in which this acclaimed actress served as a tireless
champion and vocal advocate on the hospital's behalf. In recognition
of her efforts, the hospital was renamed in her honor in 1974.
In 1992, the hospital established the Helen
Hayes MacArthur Award to honor the achievements of individuals
who help and inspire other people to live their lives to their
fullest potential. The HHH Foundation presents the award each
year at their annual Gala event. Inspired by the roses in
Mrs. MacArthur's famous rose garden, the Award is a custom
designed porcelain rose created by Edward Marshall Boehm,
Inc.
The award was presented to Mrs MacArthur posthumously
in 1993, the year of her death. Her spirit continues to sustain
HHH into its second century of care.
