About HHH

aerial view of Helen Hayes Hospital
Founded in 1900, Helen Hayes Hospital is today the largest and most comprehensive physical rehabilitation hospital in New York State. Its 155 bed state-of-the-art facility provides medical and therapeutic services to people of all ages, helping them achieve the highest level of independence possible and resume active, healthy lives. Approximately 85% to 90% of patients return home following discharge.

The vision of a prominent New York City orthopedic surgeon, the hospital was initially established in response to a public health epidemic, providing treatment to children suffering from tuberculosis. Later, it was renamed in honor of the First Lady of the American Theater, Helen Hayes MacArthur, who devoted 49 years of voluntary leadership and support of its mission. Today, as we begin the new millenium and our second century, the hospital is internationally recognized as a center of innovation and excellence in physical rehabilitation medicine and research.

Situated just 35 minutes north of New York City and commanding a magnificent view of the Hudson River on its 105 acre campus, Helen Hayes is ideally suited to care for patients from throughout the New York metropolitan, Hudson Valley and entire tri-state region.

Services are offered on both an inpatient and outpatient basis, with a Day Hospital providing intensive rehabilitation services without an overnight stay. Multidisciplinary treatment teams care for patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, cardiopulmonary and orthopedic disorders, stroke and other neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis. Individuals who are medically deconditioned, due to prolonged debilitating diseases, such as cancer, or extended hospitalizations, also benefit from a full complement of rehabilitation services.

The research division of Helen Hayes Hospital consists of four centers of excellence: Center for Neural Recovery and Rehabilitation Research, the Regional Bone Center, the Center for Rehabilitation Technology and the Clinical Research Center.

Helen Hayes Hospital is operated by the New York State Department of Health and is affiliated with NewYork Presbyterian Healthcare.
