MAY 26, 2010: HOSPITAL BECOMES TOBACCO-FREE CAMPUS

Effective May 30, 2010, Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw will be a Tobacco-Free Campus. No one on the campus of the physical rehabilitation hospital will be permitted to use tobacco or tobacco-related products within any building or on any property owned or leased by the hospital. This new policy applies not only to staff, volunteers and patients, but also to visitors, vendors and members of the public while working in or visiting the facility.

In becoming a Tobacco-Free Campus, Helen Hayes Hospital is demonstrating its commitment to providing a safe and healthy environment for all patients, visitors, employees, volunteers and other guests. The initiative will effectively eliminate second-hand smoke exposure, a recognized source of premature death and disease, to everyone on campus.

Helen Hayes Hospital has received assistance and support from the POW’R (Putnam, Orange, Westchester and Rockland) Cessation Center in implementing this new policy. POW’R Cessation Center is a program of the American Lung Association in New York, Inc., funded by the New York State Department of Health Tobacco Control Program. The Center provided free technical assistance, conducted evidence-based training for staff which was customized to their medical specialty and also offered train-the-trainer programs. In addition, the Center provided literature and consultation as well as financial support.

In preparation, the hospital has posted permanent signage announcing the tobacco ban throughout the campus. Put It Out Rockland, a division of the Rockland County Department of Health, has offered smoking cessation programs to staff and volunteers who have expressed interest in quitting smoking. In addition, both clinical and non-clinical staff has received extensive training in helping patients’ quit smoking and in addressing issues and concerns related to the banning of tobacco on campus.

Tobacco use remains the leading preventable cause of death in the United States. There are 570,000 New Yorkers currently living with tobacco-related disease, many of them chronically disabled. Approximately 25,500 New Yorkers die every year from smoking.

May 21, 2010: HELEN HAYES HOSPITAL RESEARCHERS AWARDED GRANT FROM NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH
will fund study in hip fracture prevention

The world-renowned osteoporosis research team at Helen Hayes Hospital, New York State’s premier physical rehabilitation and research facility, has been awarded a four year $1.4 million research grant by the National Institute of Arthritis,

Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The grant will fund a study examining the effect of Teriparatide (TPTD), an osteoporosis medication, on bone growth in the hip region.

The Principal investigator is Felicia Cosman, M.D., an endocrinologist and osteoporosis specialist and Medical Director of the hospital’s Clinical Research Center. The research team includes: David Dempster, Ph.D., Director, HHH Regional Bone Center; Jeri Nieves, Ph.D., Administrator, Clinical Research Center; Mathias Bostrum, M.D., Director Outpatient Orthopedic Services; and Robert Lindsay, M.D., Ph.D., Director of the Clinical Research Center.

The study will be performed in people between the ages of 60 and 85 who are undergoing a total joint replacement in the hip. Half of them will receive teriparatide and half will receive placebo for about six to eight weeks prior to their surgery. Bone samples that are removed routinely during the hip replacement surgery will then be examined to determine precisely where and how much bone is formed in the hip when people are treated with TPTD.

Teriparatide, which was approved for the treatment of osteoporosis by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003, is the only osteoporosis medication currently available that actually rebuilds bone and reverses the damage caused by the disease.

“We know that teriparatide is a very effective bone-building medication for the spine, but we have very little information on how teriparatide works in the hip region,” explains Dr. Cosman. “The study is a creative and novel approach to examine the mechanism of action of the medication at the tissue level. There is no other way to obtain hip specimens.” The study will also evaluate various biomarkers of medication effect, including investigating the size of the circulating precursor pool for osteoblasts, the cells responsible for new bone formation.

Participation in the study will take approximately six to ten weeks and will require two study visits. For information on the study or how to participate, call 845-786-4757.

April 3, 2010: HOSPITAL CLINICAL LABORATORY ACCREDITED

The Helen Hayes Hospital Clinical Laboratory has been awarded accreditation by the Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent on-site inspection.

The CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, initiated in the 1960’s, is recognized by the federal government as being equal to or more stringent that the government’s own inspection program. During the accreditation process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. CAP inspectors also examine laboratory staff qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This stringent inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients.

“This accreditation represents our commitment to providing the highest level of services to our patients,” states Steven Spitalnik, M.D., Laboratory Director. “The staff of our Clinical Lab also works closely with referring healthcare professionals, to ensure that they receive accurate and timely reports.”

The College of American Pathologists is the world’s largest association composed exclusively of board certified pathologists and is widely considered the leader in laboratory quality assurance. March 7, 2010: HOSPITAL TO HOST CARFIT EVENT
program promotes vehicle safety for older drivers

A CarFit event, which offers older adults the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles "fit" them, will take place at Helen Hayes Hospital on Saturday April 17, 2010 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. CarFit is a nationwide educational program created by the American Society on Aging and developed in collaboration with AAA (American Automobile Association), AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association. The event, which will take place at the physical rehabilitation hospital in West Haverstraw, is free of charge and open to the public.

The program is designed to help older drivers find out how well they currently fit their personal vehicle, to highlight actions they can take to improve their fit, and to promote conversations about driver safety and community mobility. A proper fit in one's personal vehicle can greatly increase not only the driver's comfort and safety, but also the safety of others.

Participants will each have a 20-minute, one-on-one consultation with a certified CarFit technician. The technician will go through a 12 point checklist to evaluate vehicle fit, including: mirror adjustment to reduce blind spots; foot positioning on the gas and brake pedals; seat positioning and line of sight over the steering wheel; properly adjusted head restraints. Hospital occupational therapists will be on hand to make recommendations of adjustments and adaptations, including adaptive devices such as seat belt extenders or steering wheel covers. Such changes help drivers benefit from their vehicle’s safety features and enable them to be in better control behind the wheel.

It has been estimated that by the year 2030, 65 million older drivers will be on our roads. Changes in vision, flexibility and strength, range of motion and height can all affect driving. Ensuring that your vehicle is a good fit to accommodate such changes is a valuable safety precaution.

The CarFit event on April 17 is free, but an appointment is required. To schedule an appointment, call 845-786-4809. For additional information on CarFit, visit the web site at www.car-fit.org.

This event is made possible through the support of the Helen Hayes Hospital Foundation.
