Inpatient Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation

A Personal Approach to Care
At Helen Hayes Hospital’s Inpatient Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program, patients benefit from a full range of rehabilitative services dedicated to enabling them to resume active, independent lives. Our philosophy is to let the patient be our guide, helping our skilled specialists design an individualized treatment plan to meet the patient’s specific needs and goals.

There are many conditions that bring patients to Helen Hayes Hospital for inpatient cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Heart surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart attack, valve replacement, heart transplant and congestive heart failure are but a few.

Each patient receives treatment a multidisciplinary rehabilitation team under the direction of a board certified physician specializing in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Working collaboratively toward the patient’s goals the team consists of a cardiologist or pulmonologist, exercise physiologist, physical and occupational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dieticians and other committed professionals. The team encourages a patient’s family to participate in the rehabilitation process through frequent visits and patient/family conferences.

"We review every patient's medical history carefully – including risk factors and individual needs -- and we tailor a plan to restore their full potential, and return them to active living."
Marjorie King, MD, FAACVPR, Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation
Board Certified, Cardiology

The Best of Care ... the Best of Results
The goals of the inpatient Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Program are tailored to meet the specific needs of each patient. Individual goals may include independence in self-care at home, increased comfort in walking, the ability to perform a home exercise program and a return to work or an outpatient exercise program. Education in risk factor reduction, nutrition and medication management are also important components of the program.
