For
patients who need intensive rehabilitation, Helen Hayes Hospital
offers a full spectrum of services, with special expertise
in caring for the acutely ill or rehabilitation patient with
complex problems. An interdisciplinary team, led by a physician,
works with the patient, family, and/or caregiver to develop
and implement an individualized treatment plan, and then carefully
monitors the patient's progress. Team specialists include
physical, occupational and respiratory therapists, speech
pathologists, rehabilitation nurses, Recreational Therapy
specialists, nutritionists, social workers and prosthetists
and orthotists.

Based on the results from a recent national survey, 89%
of patients who underwent rehabilitation at Helen
Hayes Hospital were discharged to home (FIM). Only
3% were discharged to long term care compared to 8%
nationally (FIM). Follow-up survey results report
that 95% of Helen Hayes Hospital patients were
still able to care for themselves at home ninety days (90)
post-discharge (FONE-FIM).

Based on the results from a recent national
follow-up service, persons served in eleven out of thirteen
impairment groups (stroke, brain injury, neurological, spinal
cord, amputee, arthritis pain, orthopedics, cardiac, pulmonary
and medically complex), gave Helen Hayes Hospital higher
satisfaction scores than the national norms for the same impairment
groups.
