A Personal Approach to
Care
At Helen Hayes Hospital’s Joint Replacement Rehabilitation
Program, patients benefit from a full range of rehabilitative
services dedicated to enabling them to resume active, independent
lives. Our philosophy is to let the patient be our guide,
helping our skilled specialists design an individualized treatment
plan to meet the patient’s specific needs and goals.
Our specialty is treating those who've undergone
total joint replacements – such as knees and hips. We
help them recondition their muscles, bodies and lives to attain
the greatest mobility and independence possible. Individuals
who have various types of rheumatic diseases, including rheumatoid
and osteoarthritis, polymyositis/dermatomyositis and systemic
lupus erythrematosus can also benefit from rehabilitation.
Each patient receives treatment from a multidisciplinary
rehabilitation team under the direction of a board certified
physician specializing in rehabilitation following joint replacement.
Working collaboratively toward the patient’s goals is
a team consisting of physical and occupational therapists,
rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dieticians and other
committed professionals. The team encourages a patient’s
family to participate in the rehabilitation process through
frequent visits and patient/family conferences.
"Joint replacement
can really knock you for a loop if you don't have the right
kind of rehabilitative program behind you. You need a personalized
regimen including monitored exercise, re-conditioning and
life training. Our patients have great outcomes because we
make sure they receive all the support they need."
-- Alfred Becker, MD, Co-Director, Rheumatic Diseases,
Board Certified, Internal Medicine & Rheumatology
The Best of Care... The Best of Results
One of our program's highlights is an on-site state-of-the-art
warm water aquatic facility. Warm water immersion lessens
the effects of gravity, providing buoyancy and reducing stress
on joints. Under the watchful eye of their therapist, patients
perform exercises in the heated pool (92-94 degrees), improving
strength, flexibility and endurance and increasing circulation
The goal of the joint replacement rehabilitation
program is to assist patients in achieving their highest possible
level of mobility and enabling them to resume activities of
daily living.
