A Personal Approach to
Care
At Helen Hayes Hospital’s Osteoporosis and Orthopedic
Rehabilitation Program, patients benefit from a full range
of rehabilitative services dedicated to enabling them to resume
active, independent lives. Our philosophy is to let the patient
be our guide, helping our skilled specialists design an individualized
treatment plan to meet the patient’s specific needs
and goals.
When patients come to this program, it is usually
as a result of a disabling bone fracture, often due to advanced
age, osteoporosis or endocrinological disease. Injuries tend
to occur at the hip, though multiple vertebral fractures are
not uncommon. No matter where the body is affected, it's critical
that patients receive the support they need to restore mobility,
manage their pain and discomfort, and minimize the long-term
effects the fracture can have on their lives.
Each patient receives treatment from a multidisciplinary
rehabilitation team under the direction of a board certified
physician specializing in osteoporosis and orthopedic rehabilitation.
Working collaboratively toward the patient’s goals,
the team consists of physical and occupational therapists,
rehabilitation nurses, case managers, dieticians and other
committed professionals. The team encourages a patient’s
family to participate in the rehabilitation process through
frequent visits and patient/family conferences.
"Fractures can have
a serious impact on an individual’s ability to function,
so it's absolutely essential that patients receive the specialized
rehabilitative care that helps them regain their mobility
and endurance quickly and effectively."
-- Majorie Baron, MD, Director, Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Board Certified, Internal Medicine
The Best of Care... The Best of Results
Patients with hip and vertebral fractures receive the immediate
and specialized care of experts in our onsite Prosthetic Orthotic
Center, who can provide customized bracing. The rehabilitation
program also includes access to the hospital’s state-of-the-art
aquatic facility. The heated pool provides buoyancy, making
exercise less stressful on joints and a proven means of increasing
strength, flexibility and endurance. Following discharge,
patients can use the hospital’s Wellness Center to continue
their exercise regimens and maintain their strength.
