Day
Hospital
This program bridges the gap between traditional inpatient,
home care and outpatient rehabilitation programs, offering
intensive medical, nursing and therapeutic services
in a supportive and cost effective environment. Patients,
who attend anywhere from two to five days per week,
have the advantage of living at
|
home while
receiving fully integrated services. The Day Hospital
may be recommended for individuals who have progressed
well in acute rehabilitation and can benefit further
from continued, intensive therapy, but no longer require
24-hour care

Physical and Occupational
Therapy
Services are provided in dedicated outpatient
therapy suites, outfitted with state-of-the-art equipment.
A therapist with experience in SCI works one-on-one with the
patient, helping to provide opportunities for regaining skills
and the tools to promote an active life at home, work or school.
Physical therapists, who address physical impairments and
functional limitations, will assess strength and flexibility
and utilize individualized exercises and hands-on techniques
to restore the greatest degree of function and mobility. Our
physical therapy program enables individuals to walk with
devices, such as braces and walkers, or to use a wheelchair
in the community. Occupational therapists, who help patients
carry out activities of daily living, may make adaptive equipment
recommendations, provide splinting and other therapeutic services
to enable the patient to return to work, home, school and
the community.

Primary Medical
Care
Individuals with spinal cord injury have
unique health problems that most family practitioners
are not comfortable managing. This is why Helen Hayes
Hospital offers patients with SCI a primary care clinic
that can meet their special needs |
| A specialist who has
been board certified to care for patients with SCI will
help to manage your neurogenic bowel and bladder, as well
as your spasticity, neuropathic pain, musculoskeletal
problems and skin breakdown. In addition, your nutritional,
psychosocial and physical activity needs are addressed
in order to prevent future difficulties with obesity,
osteoporosis, muscle wasting, depression and anxiety.
Your specialist will offer you
routine vaccinations for flu and pneumonia prevention
and you will also be given yearly laboratory and urological
screening evaluations. The specialist serves as a "gatekeeper"
to other medical specialty services which you may require.
She can help you navigate through the matrix of the
health care system, and will work with other physicians
to get you the care you need and deserve.
For information on primary care
