  • Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw, New York, one of the nation’s leading specialty physical rehabilitation hospitals, has been certified as a chapter of Disabled Sports USA.

Founded in 1967 by disabled Vietnam veterans, Disabled Sports USA (DS/USA) provides national leadership and opportunities for individuals with disabilities to develop independence, confidence, and fitness through participation in community sports, recreation and educational programs. DS/USA is a national multi-sport, multi-disability organization serving more than 60,000 youth and adults annually. A member of the U.S. Olympic Committee, DS/USA offers programs through its nationwide network of 100 community-based chapters operating in 38 states.

Through its Adaptive Sports & Recreation Program, Helen Hayes Hospital is committed to enabling individuals of all abilities to pursue competitive and recreational sports and activities. Such activities speed the recovery process, improve and maintain health and conditioning and foster socialization and camaraderie. Exploring new activities, or returning to activities enjoyed prior to being injured or becoming ill, demonstrates that living a full, active and enjoyable life is within reach.

Currently, the hospital offers and hosts an array of adapted sports activities, including golf, downhill skiing, sailing, softball, gardening, kayaking, handcycling, bowling and yoga. Any individual with a physical disability, including amputation, spinal cord injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis or an orthopedic disorder is welcome to participate.
