Helen Hayes Hospital Awarded Three-Year CARF Accreditation
January 29, 2010Helen Hayes Hospital in West Haverstraw is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a Three-Year Accreditation by the Commission of Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) for thirteen of its programs. The Three-Year Accreditation from the international accrediting body represents one of the largest numbers of accredited programs of any rehabilitation facility in the northeast.

This accreditation decision represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to the CARF standards. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable, and accountable.
In its comprehensive accreditation report, CARF specifically highlighted numerous strengths at the rehabilitation hospital, including: an interdisciplinary rehabilitation team of dedicated professionals with longstanding service; the beautiful facility and campus; the array of educational resources and programs for patients; a strong recreational therapy program; collaborative spinal cord research initiatives; leadership in adaptive sports & recreation for individuals with disabilities; and comprehensive on-site assistive technology and prosthetic orthotic centers.

Founded in 1900, Helen Hayes Hospital is the country’s very first specialty physical rehabilitation hospitals. It provides both acute and subacute rehabilitation services, as well as comprehensive therapeutic outpatient services. Affiliated with NewYork Presbyterian Healthcare System, Helen Hayes Hospital is owned and operated by the New York State Department of Health.
CARF is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body whose mission is to promote the quality, value, and optimal outcomes of services through a consultative accreditation process that centers on enhancing the lives of the persons served. Founded in 1966 as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities, and now known as CARF, the accrediting body establishes consumer-focused standards to help organizations measure and improve the quality of their programs and services.
