For over 100 years, Helen Hayes Hospital has been nationally and internationally recognized for excellence in rehabilitation medicine. Central to our mission is a profound appreciation for the role of research in identifying new approaches to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of injury and illness. While physical rehabilitation provides our patients with a means to improve mobility and function, it is research that will ultimately deliver the cures for the disabilities they grapple with.

The incidence of stroke, osteoporosis, Parkinson's disease and other conditions will undoubtedly swell as the baby boom generation ages. It is, therefore, incumbent on us to search for the breakthroughs that will alleviate the effects of disability.

Just as our hospital has played a leadership role in rehabilitation, the scientists who lead our research centers have played a prominent role in both basic and clinical research in their respective fields. Their groundbreaking work has been well published and presented at scientific meetings around the world. Gratefully, their commitment is fostered by tremendous support from the federal and state government, and numerous public and private foundations, corporations and organizations.

The hospital's mission and research initiatives share a common bond: the ability to shape the future of rehabilitation medicine in the 21st century.
