Prosthetic Orthotic Center

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center specializes in providing a full range of evaluation, fabrication and follow-up services, ensuring accuracy, safety, comfort and appropriateness of device. The Center is the most comprehensive facility in the New York Metropolitan/Hudson Valley region. Its ability to custom design and fabricate a wide variety of devices for both adults and children, while offering personalized attention to individual needs, is what has drawn patients from the tri-state area, and around the world.

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center's office and fabrication facility is located in a dedicated, 7,000 square foot space within Helen Hayes Hospital. The Center is fully accessible and is served by state-of-the-art technology, including a comprehensive CAD-CAM system. All prosthetic and orthotic devices are designed and fitted on-site utilizing the most appropriate materials, techniques and technology to meet a patient's needs.

Our Staff

The Center is fully staffed by a team of board certified prosthetists, orthotists and technicians who have extensive experience working with both adult

and pediatric patients. Staff members pursue ongoing training in the most advanced technology, including myoelectrics, scoliosis, lightweight graphite systems and silicone suction suspension.
Who We Help
The need for a prosthetic or orthotic device may arise from a traumatic injury, congenital condition or disabling illness. The staff at the Prosthetic Orthotic Center have helped individuals with cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, spinal bifida and scoliosis, as well as those with spinal cord injuries or amputations. The Center also specializes in meeting the needs of competitive athletes.
Our Services
  The Prosthetic Orthotic Center prides itself on the personalized attention, expert consulting and diagnostic services, technical expertise and timely delivery it provides to every patient. Drawing on the unparalleled depth and range of services available within the hospital, the Centers are well equipped to deal with complex and challenging cases.

Staff pay close attention to an individual's lifestyle needs, including recreational and work demands. Specialized devices can be constructed for such activities as running, golfing, competitive sports and writing.

The staff work personally with every patient to check the fit and comfort of every device. Only when the fit is deemed accurate, comfortable and acceptable to the patient is it released for use. In addition, the patient and any necessary family members are educated in the proper use and care of the prosthesis or orthosis. Center staff are accessible for follow-up care, including any adjustments and modifications which may be necessary.

The Prosthetic Orthotic Center designs and manufactures a comprehensive array of devices, all customized to meet an individual's specific needs, including:

* custom foot orthoses
* sports knee bracing
* post polio bracing
* spinal and post-op bracing
* scoliosis bracing
* pediatric and adult prosthetic designs

CAD-CAM
  The Helen Hayes Hospital Prosthetic Orthotic Center utilize state-of the-art CAD-CAM (Computer Aided Design - Computer Aided Manufacturing) technology to produce prosthetic devices. This technological
breakthrough has revolutionized the way prosthetics are designed and produced. Devices can now be made quicker, and with a greater degree of accuracy than ever before. In addition, because all of a patient's data is stored in the computer that produces their individual device, it is easy to track anatomical changes and determine when a new device may be necessary.
Certification
The Center at Helen Hayes Hospital is certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics (ABC). This certification represents nationally recognized standards of excellence in the field.
